It’s the amazing life-long collection of the late Graham Austin, and it has to be seen to be believed.
A room full of tiny kids’ bikes and scooters from generations past, the original McKinlay’s delivery bike, a whole section of international bicycles, possibly every Tasmanian-made bike, mini penny farthings and of course, Mr Austin’s amazing custom creations are all there to see.
See if you can spot the bike owned by the late Dr Lester Jones which he rode non-stop from Hobart to Burnie, or the quirky tree ladder bike designed to help fruit pickers get to work and pick fruit!
Graham’s daughter and Zion Hill Church Pastor Merrilyn Billing said that a lack of volunteers to help run the museum means it only opens for special occasions, but she would love to see more community help from some “old codgers” so that it can be open on a daily basis.
The display will be open at Zion Hill, Warring St, Ravenswood (the old high school) from Tuesday, March 8 from 10am. Entry cost is $8.
Whether it’s choosing to ride to work, take to a trail or see some classic Tasmanian bikes on display, there is plenty of motivation around the state’s annual Bike Week, from Saturday, March 3 to Sunday, March 11 in 2018.
Whether you have a road bike, mountain bike, e-bike, city bike with a basket or a clunker, find something that suits you and join in.
Tamar Bicycle Users Group (T-BUG) has organised several events in Launceston, including a pop-up shop in the Centreway Arcade that will be open from Monday for two weeks from 10am to 2pm.
Drop in for a chat about anything to do with Bike Week and/or riding bikes around the region. There will be plenty of info and giveaways available plus the launch of the Zwift Bike app.
A major event is the Community Ride and Picnic in the park at Heritage Forest on Sunday, March 4. Meet at Churchill Park at 10.30 am and pedal for fun.
On Tuesday there will be a bike film night at the Gunners Arms Hotel, Lawrence St, Launceston with a screening of The Flying Scotsman and Cycology will hold a free bike workshop on Wednesday, March 7 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at 119 York St, Launceston. Bookings on 63319112.
And there’s heaps of rides for all different levels organised throughout the week.
