A life member of both Launceston United Soccer Club and Riverside Tennis Club, father-of-two Witheford died on New Year’s Day aged 87.
A memorial is being held at Launceston United’s Birch Avenue ground on Sunday, February 4, from 2pm to celebrate Witheford’s life.
Born in Sheffield, England, in April 1930, Witheford moved to Australia with his wife June and sons Martin and Michael in 1965 and within a week was heavily involved in the tennis and soccer clubs.
For 37 years Witheford was a physical education teacher, in England and then at Brooks and Queechy between 1953 and 1990.
In addition to playing tennis, badminton, basketball and golf, Witheford played third division soccer for Chesterfield in England and holds a Launceston United record for scoring 10 goals in one game.
