Northern athletes acquitted themselves with distinction among a field of more than 80 competitors in the two-kilometre pub to club ocean swim at Devonport on January 20.

In what were described as tough conditions, Launceston’s Chelsea Savage, 15, won the junior female section, in 32.29 minutes.
Zane Hadley, 14, of Legana, came second in the junior male category, a 10-second whisker behind Hobart’s Samuel Askey-Doran, also 14.
Hadley’s impressive swim in 28.39 minutes also put him fourth overall in the swim from the Elimatta pub to the Devonport Surf Lifesaving Club.
Ethan Stretton, 15, who is relocating from Burnie to Launceston to live, was the third junior male, one minute and 10 seconds behind Hadley.
Open water specialist Ray Winstanley, 31, of Hobart, won the event and the open men’s category, in a time of 27.20 minutes, with Michael Boult, 19, of Hobart second.
Other category winners were: Emily Bird (open female); Andrew Brocklesby (senior masters male); Megan Wells (masters female); Amanda Duggan (senior masters female) and Ricky Homan (masters male).
Open titles
Ray Winstanley’s success at the Devonport pub to club swim came less than a week after he claimed the men’s 5km title at the Swimming Tasmania open water championships at Seven Mile Beach, Hobart.
Fellow Sandy Bay swimming club member Jayde Richardson, 25, won the women’s 5km title. Other titles went to _ 1km: Rebecca MacDonald, 13, HC Swim Club; Josh Weinmann, 15, Huon Valley; Hannah Manning, 15, Sandy Bay; Amelia Hodder, 16, Arena Swim Club (visitor) and Samantha Richardson, 16, HC. 5km: Samuel Askey-Doran, 14, HC; Hannah Johnson, 15, Sandy Bay.
Top ten
Ten Tasmanians took part in the Victorian open titles earlier this month.
They were: Morgen Hawkins and Kit DeJonge, of South Esk; Emma Condie, Michael Boult, Harrison Grant, Lewis Wood, Mia Grant and Sam Askey-Doran of HC; and sisters Amelie and Stefanie McCarthy, of Hobart Aquatic.
Sprint champs
More than 200 swimmers have entered the Tasmanian sprint and relay championships, which take place at the Launceston Aquatic Centre over the weekend of Saturday, February 3, and Sunday, February 4.
On the Saturday, in-pool warm-up is from 3pm, with racing from 3.45pm.
On the Sunday, warm-up is from 8am with racing from 8.45am.
