January 2018 edition of Tasmanian Farmer

It has been a mixed year for agriculture in Tasmania, with the first National Agriculture Day acknowledging the country’s farmers held in 2017.

However, there were four key stories that dominated the headlines: the weather, Edith Creek dairy processing plant closing, JBS shutting down its Longford sheep plant and blueberry rust.

The January edition of Tasmanian Farmers looks at each story and its impact on Tasmania’s agriculture scene.

We also look at at the organic milk market in the state, featuring Geoff Atkinson and his deal with Ashgrove Cheese for organic dairy products.

Mr Atkinson had been supplying Ashgrove with milk from his Cuprona farm Ellenview since July, after previously supplying Murray Goulburn and Lion.

Between Mr Atkinson and fellow Mount Hicks organic farmer Kevin Frankcombe, they supply 1600 litres of organic milk per day, with the aim of being at 2000 litres by Christmas.
