The 32-year-old arrives at his third Big Bash League club after stints with Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat, saying his batting in the shortest version of the game improved under the tutelage of Daniel Vettori in Queensland.
“I really enjoyed my time up there (at the Heat) practicing and developing new skills and developing things like my sweep shot and the ramp shot which I had never really tried before, which excited me and gave me a fresh outlook on the game,’’ Doolan said.
He showcased this when he made 27 from 22 in the practice match win over Sydney Sixers on Tuesday.
Doolan will get another opportunity when the Hurricanes face the Melbourne Stars in Traralgon on Friday.
He said he would love to be in the team in his home city of Launceston on Saturday, December 30 at UTAS Stadium.
“I never ever thought I could be playing at York Park, but the game has come such a long just the way it has become a real spectacle now, as it is not the classic game that I grew up loving, it is now more about entertainment and fireworks, especially in Twenty20,’’ he said.
“I did hope one day I’d get to play at the NTCA Ground (where he played his club cricket for Launceston), but that doesn’t look like it will happen now.”
