Heavy rain on Wednesday night meant some damp surfaces in the morning, before sunshine in the middle of the day brought families in.
Launceston Show Society president Jock Gibson said he was cautiously optimistic of an improved turnout across the next couple of days.
“The day’s turnout was fair without being great,” he said.
“I think Wednesday’s rain kept a few people away, and the crowd thinned out a bit in the afternoon as the weather deteriorated, but there was a nice gathering in the middle of the day.
“I think we get 13,000 people through the gates overall, we will be pretty happy.”
The show will continue on Friday, where it will be open until 10pm.
Friday night’s entertainment includes two performances from The Smokin Elmores, as well as a set by Lockie Cosser. Judging on the second day will consist of interbreed dairy and beef cattle. There will also be equestrian events from 9am.
