While Riewoldt’s thoughts turned to cousin Nick who retired this year with a premiership medal the most notable absence from his trophy cabinet, Nankervis said he was proud to share his moment with family members.
“I had about 10 or 15 come over, and particularly my mum and dad, my brother and my girlfriend, the support they've shown me is unbelievable,” Nankervis told the AFL website.
“When I was down and out last year they were there for me and I'm so glad I can share this feeling with them, because they've been with me all the way.”
The former Northern Bomber from George Town was the hard luck story of last year’s Grand Final, selected only as an emergency for Sydney having been dropped when Kurt Tippett returned from injury.
“I was pretty gutted to not get a game, I knew I could play AFL footy but I just wasn't getting the opportunity," said the 23-year-old who played 24 games this season and edged a pivotal ruck contest in the decider against in-form Crow Sam Jacobs.
“To leave the Swans was so hard but it's all worth it now.
“I spoke to a few clubs but I really got along with Dimma (Damien Hardwick) from the start. He came across as someone who really cared about my family and about me enjoying my footy.”
Before leading the post-match celebrations by joining The Killers on stage, Riewoldt, 28, spared a thought for his cousin whose glittering career featured 336 games, 718 goals, six best and fairest awards, five All Australian selections and the 2004 AFLPA MVP award but two losing Grand Finals.
“My cousin never won a premiership, and to be honest he probably deserves this more than I do,” said the Richmond forward, who took six marks and kicked 2.3 on Saturday.
“He's an amazing man, he certainly turned me into the person I am today.
“I love him, I spoke to him during the week about what Grand Final week would be like, but the family you have behind you is so important.”
