The brown trout season opens on Saturday, August 5, and the outlook is excellent.
Although the winter has been drier than usual most lakes have good water levels and average spring rain will produce some great fishing opportunities.
Four Springs Lake is ready for the start of the season, with more than 6000 wild adult brown trout released from the Central Highlands into this fishery over winter.
The Anglers Access Program has made it easier to fish spots along Brumbys Creek and the Meander, Macquarie and Mersey rivers. Recent work will improve access on the South Esk River from Hadspen through to the headwaters above Mathinna.
Lake Leake is a good early season water with generally milder weather. Wet fly and lure casting around the weed beds can be fun. Dry fly fishing in October to December along with drift spinning amongst the dead timber will catch fish.
Bronte Lagoon, Pine Tier Lagoon, Lake Echo, Little Pine Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon, yingina/Great Lake and Woods Lake will fish well from the opening.
Lake Crescent is a big fish water. The water level has held up and with some more rain the early season provides the best sport as the water floods the marshes. The lake has both brown and rainbow trout. It will produce some massive trout again this season for those looking for the fish of a lifetime.
Tooms Lake will be another trophy trout water this coming season. This lake is at a good level for fishing. The milder weather at Tooms Lake can make it more attractive than the highlands for the start of the season. The baitfish population continues to provide a food source for the trout. This should make the big wild brown trout even bigger. Tooms Lake is one to try before summer.
The Western Lakes region provides a range of fishing experiences. Early season fish cruise and tail along the edges. As the weather warms, the region offers fantastic dry fly polarioding. Lure fishing from a boat or the shore in lakes Ada, Augusta and Double Lagoon will be exciting.
With no flooding, the sea run trout will be about in the estuaries and lower reaches of major rivers from the start of this season. This can provide exciting fishing right through to Christmas. Fishing for sea runners is reliable in the kanamaluka/River Tamar, Pieman, Mersey, Inglis, Forth, Leven rivers and many more right around the State. Great river fishing is often available close to home.
An angling licence is available to suit everyone from 48 hour, seven or 28 days, one or five seasons. Purchase your angling licence and find other information, including the latest fish stocking activities on the Inland Fisheries Service website www.ifs.tas.gov.au.
