With Bendigo breathing firmly down their neck, the fourth-placed Thunder had to win, but it took them until late in the third quarter to establish a double-digit lead over the Gunners, who are last in their conference.
The visitors continued to hang around in the final quarter until a 7-2 run, fueled by Brad Simpson, finally broke their back with 2:51 left and the margin out to 15 points.
Ahmad Starks led the Thunder’s scoring with 21 points, with fellow import Jeremiah Ingram adding 19 points and Daniel Sepokas 15 points.
Centre Ben Allen was a force all night for the Canberra, finishing with 29 points, while Glenn Morison added 24 points.
The Thunder hit the road next weekend for two vital games against Ballarat and Bendigo.
