Flying in from Sydney, Launceston-born counter-tenor Nicholas Tolputt will join soloist soprano Elizabeth Rowlings and baritone Benjamin Martin on stage to perform some of the most elegant sacred music, in a performance presented by EsqueOpera.
Both singers have been opera singing taught by concert organiser Mr Martin.
“I’m now based in Sydney and Ben was my first ever singing teacher, so it was a real joy growing up and being able to learn [from him],” Mr Tolputt said.
“I’ve always loved being able to come home to sing, and this is potentially one of the last times that I’ll be home to sing.”
At the end of the year Mr Tolputt will fly over to Europe to begin auditioning for music conservatoriums and schools.
The opportunity to pursue his musical career internationally followed from being awarded the prestigious $30,000 Marianne Mathy Scholarship at the Australian Singing Competition last year.
“That will help me head overseas to continue pursuing that as a career, but the importance of coming home to sing in something like this … it’s really quite wonderful to be able to do this, because baroque music is something I’ll be singing a lot of,” Mr Tolputt said.
“I’ve got very fond memories of singing in this church and it’s always very special to sing next to Ben.”
Mr Martin said both singers had a long history of performing in Launceston.
“Elizabeth has been training with me for 10 years … and she’s performed as soloist in all of the EsqueOpera concerts that we’ve done so far,” he said.
The concert will also feature the talents of trumpeter Darcy O’Malley, studying in Hobart at the Conservatorium, and pipe organist Lynda Nicholls.
“I try to use local artists as much as I can,” Mr Martin said.
Mr Martin said those who have never heard Baroque music before could expect “a lovely afternoon of reflective, calm, beautiful music”.
“There’s nothing challenging in it, it’s relaxing … it’s nothing heavy.”
Baroque Masterworks, at Holy Trinity Church, Cameron Street, Sunday at 2pm.
Tickets: $20 at the door.
