Goward will be back in action at round two of the state junior championships scheduled for beautiful Cloudy Bay on Bruny Island this weekend.
Following in the footsteps of Brooke Mason, Zoe Grey and Lizzy Stokely, Goward has developed a powerful flowing style that sets her above rivals including Stella Gibson, Melaleuca Sansom-Gatrell and Luca Brodribb.
Intensive coaching over the past two years at state and national level has enabled Goward to develop a series of maneuvers in sequence on the one wave with a strong flowing style which is a key skill for aspiring competition surfers.
Talented Clifton Beach surfer Rudy Davis is also expected to dominate the under-18 and under-21 age groups following his eye-catching victory in the East Coast Open Classic at Scamander over state open champion Hamish Renwick, of Sandford.
However, Davis should be pushed all the way by the likes of Devonport’s Shae Cadle, Liam Viney, of Penguin, and Clifton Beach’s Kelly Nordstrom.
Strong competition is expected in the under-16 and under-14 age groups.
A strong southern contingent led by Luca Booth, Noah Hassett, Darcy Edwards and Lachi Robinson will be keen to hold off Devonport’s rising star Tom Roberts.
National under-18 longboard bronze medalist Kieren Thomas will doubtless find the open walls of Cloudy Bay to his liking where his powerful flowing style will feature in the open men’s longboard.
Challengers Tom Kelly, of Scamander, and Micheal Paxton, of Dodges Ferry, will be tough opposition for Thomas who will have to be on form to win.
The women’s longboard has attracted the biggest field in years with Sandford’s Jo Goldfinch facing a host of challengers in this popular event.
Forecast conditions for Bruny this weekend promise good surf and weather so a high standard of surfing is expected.
