On a day when most favourites were consigned to also-ran’s, the four-year-old gelding, who was runner-up in the Newmarket Handicap back in November, finally gave punters some joy at the starting price of $2.90.
Jumping from barrier seven, jockey Sigrid Carr piloted Gee Gee Red Prince straight to the front, where most of the winners on the day were coming from. But Carr was quickly joined by Raquel Clark on Teriki in the lead, with the pair establishing a two-length lead as the rounded the home turn.
With the pressure on, Gee Gee Red Prince surged again down the straight, holding off the fast-finishing I’m Wesley, with Teriki fading slightly to grab third. The win took his earnings to over $225,000 in 22 starts and franked the confidence Brighton trainer Stuart Gandy had in his horse despite it stepping out on the synthetic track surface at Spreyton for the first time.
“That didn’t worry us too much about that, the breed he’s from seems to like the track and the firm going, and he’s a front-running horse,” Gandy said. Gandy plans to take Gee Gee Red Prince to the $50,000 weight-for-age Luxbet Stakes at Mowbray on January 25.
The result capped off a winning double for Gandy and Carr, with Gee Gee Spitfire saluting in the Class 1 Handicap (1150m) earlier on.
