Arguably the state’s hottest netball prospect, the 20-year-old has committed to the Victorian Fury in her maiden campaign in the national second-tier competition.
The Winnelah product said it never came down to a call between the Melbourne Vixens’ feeder club or the Netball Tasmania-aligned Collingwood Magpies ANL side. “It made it an easy choice, actually,” she said.
“I wasn’t contacted by anyone else, so my selection was through the Netball Victoria pathway I’m playing.
“I think also when any ANL offers came out for Tassie, I already had been selected.
“I can’t be a Vixens training partner and be a part of the Collingwood set-up. You have to be one or another.”
The Vixens had first shown interest in the North-East midcourter when she moved to Melbourne for university.
But she still missed out on a place on the Fury roster in a season that included captaincy for the Tasmania 21-and-under side at the national titles in Launceston.
“They still offered me as a training partner, so I went with that and with Fury being aligned with Vixens, and also living in Melbourne, I trialled for Fury and got that along with the training partner opportunity,” Rainbow said.
Rainbow has kept a low-key profile since recently signing for Victorian Fury.
It’s on the back of niggling injuries that held her game back despite selection as the first Tasmanian in a decade to play for Australia at a World Youth Championship.
“I still feel there’s a lot to go and I want to even get a lot out of my VNL season this year coming,” Rainbow said.
“It’s kind of a hard one because I’ve only had one season back from injury, so it’s hard to gauge and there’s definitely a lot more to come of it.”
