While initially it looked to be the wrong choice, he came through to record his first ever premier class win on a drying track.
In contrast to most of the field, Crutchlow chose a hard compound front and rear wet weather tyre.
In the early stages of the race he was struggling to be on the pace with those who went with a soft option front and rear.
As the track dried out, the LCR Honda rider worked his way through the field to become the first British rider to win a premier class GP in 35 years, and ironically he carried the number 35 on his bike.
The last British rider to win a premier class GP was the late Barry Sheene who won the 1981 Swedish GP on a 500cc Yamaha.
Multiple world champion Valentino Rossi chose the same tyre combination and came home second on his Yamaha.
