A former Launceston man has enjoyed the spoils in a unique European rally driving class during his first serious attempt at the sport.

Driver and navigator Mark von Bibra was awarded the trophy on behalf of his five-member team that won the 2016 Wave Rally during the electric vehicle contest.
The ITK Engineering team completed the eight-day World Advanced Vehicle Expedition rally over 1600kms from Bremerhaven, Germany through France to the finish in Geneva, Switzerland in a winning BMW13.
Crossing the line first came second to performing across ten challenges to accumulate a series of points to win.
The rally is world’s largest electric-powered vehicle race that enforces competing cars to adhere to a strict zero emissions during the rally.
The event in its sixth year attracted 75 teams from 13 nations, including Canada.
Evandale’s Robert von Bibra said on hearing of his son’s maiden win in his first dabble into electric car rallying came as a shock.
“I think it’s just a great achievement what he has done,” he said.
“I was very surprised, but also very proud.”
A one-time Riverside High student, von Bibra lives and works in Stuttgart, Germany for ITK Engineering.
