Whiting, 29, was a member of the Blues leadership group last season as vice-captain and has stepped up to share the captain’s duties with Sam Rundle this season. Having played about 120 games with the Blues, he is one of their most experienced campaigners.
“It has been good to help the younger fellows out and pass on a bit of stuff that I know but it is not too much different to being a senior player and everyone sort of helps out,” Whiting said.
“We have shown glimpses of what we can do but we need to try to get the younger guys to be mentally switched on for four quarters instead of playing a quarter here and there.
“It is a tough trip to Burnie and obviously they are one of the favourites for the flag and we are going down there as underdogs but we have beaten them down there before and proved it can be done – it is about having the right mindset.”
