Known as Bart - cheeky and yellow, the retired accountant's daily drive and race car is both fast and noisy.
"I have had the car four years, it is originally an American four-cylinder car and I bought it from a guy in Adelaide," Mr Barnard, 70, said.
"He bought it from America and put a Rover V8 in it with an automatic gearbox.
"It was basically what I was looking for, because I wanted to do a lot more modifications.
"The only thing MG about it is its body.
"The front suspension has been highly modified for full coilovers, it's got Nissan 300z rotors with Rover four-pot calipers, the engine is a four-litre Range Rover modified engine win internals modified with long conrods and short pistons, the gearbox is a Borg-Warner T-5 out of an EB Falcon Ute and the whole rear end is an R31 Nissan Skyline.
"I did all the suspension work myself but I took the car back to Adelaide to have the big engine put in.
"It is my daily drive and it has been built for performance rather than looks."
Mr Barnard has won two Tasmanian titles in the historic regularity category, which is point series against the clock.
"I won in 2014 and 2013 back to back and, prior to that, I finished second and a third," the MG Car Club of Tasmania member said.
"I have always been interested in motorsport and when I was forced to take early retirement 12 years ago I decided to give it a go.
"I'm going to do a couple of events this year, but I'm not going to do the series.
"I really find it hard to stop racing while I've still got it so it is time to sell it and get a buzz box ute."
