Cooney was awarded the fight 30-27 by the judges, after his opponent, 23-year-old Malaysian fighter Muhammad Ottman, received a significant cut to the head just 90 seconds into the fight.
Blood was pouring from the cut above the Malaysian's right eye and treatment was unable to stem the flow.
The fight was eventually stopped and Cooney declared a unanimous points winner.
"I feel like I didn't even have the chance to settle in and the head clash was just really had timing," Cooney said.
"It would have been nice to have a couple more rounds, but I got the win so I'm happy. I fight tomorrow and I'm feeling good."
The 21-year-old boxer from Latrobe will face Scotland's Charlie Flynn in the next round on Sunday.
Flynn, also 21, had a first-round bye and finished fifth in the 2013 European championships, 33rd at the world titles that year and is ranked 23rd in the world.
