Geale announced that the fight will take place at Madison Square Garden in the US on Saturday, July 26.
Golovkin, 32, from Kazakhstan, boasts a 29-0 record with 26 knockouts and is the current WBA and IBO world middleweight champion.
He last defended his title against Ghana's Osumanu Adama in Monte Carlo on February 1.
Geale lost his IBF world title to Englishman Darren Baker in the US last August.
His only fight since was a crushing defeat of fellow Australian Garth Wood in February.
