Bryan began work as an apprentice fitter and machinist at the Burnie paper mill where he worked for close to 20 years.

He first stood for State Parliament in 1996 and was successful at the 1998 election. Under the leadership of then Premier Jim Bacon, Bryan served as Government Whip and as a Parliamentary Secretary.
Bryan topped the poll in Braddon at the 2002 election and was appointed Minister for Primary Industries, Water and Environment. Since that time Bryan has held numerous portfolios and currently serves as Deputy Premier as well as Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Minister for Energy and Resources, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Planning and Minister for Racing.
Although Bryan’s personal interests have taken a back seat to his busy Parliamentary schedule, he is still a keen fly fisherman and enjoys hunting and archery as well as bushwalking and scuba diving.
