Nippers aged eight to 14 from 10 surf clubs across the state participated in round 2 of the junior carnival series - battling very ordinary conditions.
Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club president Jo-Anne Coates said the wind and the ocean current proved demanding.
Children took part in a two-kilometre run, beach sprints, relays, flag events, swimming and water boards.
``It has been a challenging day for water safety,'' she said.
``The children get a lot of camaraderie and enjoy catching up with kids from other clubs on a fairly regular basis - they make mates for life.
``All the children have to fulfil some surf awareness programs, which includes basic skills and first aid before they are able to compete.''
