But for all the potty talk, Regurgitator's Ben Ely takes a cultured approach to getting an album done.
Take Dirty Pop Fantasy - the band's eighth studio effort.
Ely and co-conspirator Quan Yeomans could have used the formula that has endeared them to a generation of Aussie alt-rock fans.
But instead, they bunkered down to record in a Hong Kong apartment, deliberately removing themselves from familiarity.
"It is always good I think, to take yourself out of your comfort zone and away from your friends and family," Ely said.
"You're suddenly in a realm that you're not used to, which helps you knuckle down and get to work a little bit more."
Productivity was aided by the fact the band had to walk up nine flights of stairs to get to their equipment.
"Once you were in the room you couldn't really leave unless you were prepared to walk up and down again," Ely said.
In parts, Dirty Pop Fantasy is a throwback to the grunge sound that made Regurgitator big.
But with the arse comes equal parts class, with acoustic sounds and polished synth dancing with a distorted punk drive.
Tasmania last saw Regurgitator in October last year, when the band played seminal albums Unit and Tu Plang back-to-back at the Brisbane Hotel in Hobart.
This time they will play two consecutive nights at the Republic Bar in North Hobart.
Ely said tracks from Dirty Pop Fantasy would feature, as would various gems from the band's 20-year catalogue.
"We've got new songs, and a heap of old ones that I never get sick of playing," he said.
"Except Polyester Girl. People love that song. I don't know why - I hate it."
