Biafra has been a thoughtful but sneering voice on political and social activism in the Los Angeles punk scene ever since his former band rose to popularity with the hit song Holiday In Cambodia in 1979.
Biafra has also been no stranger to controversy and was famously the subject in a 1986 obscenity trial, brought against him by the Parents Music Resource Centre, which objected to an HR Giger poster insert for the Dead Kennedys' album Frankenchrist.
Since then, he has staged thousands of spoken word performances worldwide, combining serious political and philosophical thought with satire, and produced nine spoken word albums.
Biafra has not completely left the punk music scene after quitting the Dead Kennedys in 1987, fronting several successful musical projects with backing bands including Mojo Nixon, Nomeansno, DOA and The Melvins.
The Tasmanian visit coincides with a national tour with Biafra's new musical project Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine.
Jello Biafra will appear at the Founders Room at the Salamanca Arts Centre on Saturday, May 25.
The performance will be followed by a special DJ set from Biafra at an after party at the Brisbane Hotel in Hobart.
