Mercedes-Benz's flagship electric car to revert to classic styling

While Mercedes-Benz executives have previously said its future electric vehicles will revert to a more traditional design – citing pushback from buyers regarding the radical styling of its current line-up – the brand's CEO has teased what one of these changes will be.

Autocar reports Ola Källenius, the head of Mercedes-Benz globally, has announced the upcoming updated EQS flagship sedan will be offered with the choice of a grille akin to that of the S-Class, with horizontal chrome bars and the iconic three-pointed star on the bonnet.

"Some [customers] will want to keep a more sporty look and have the star integrated in the panel, and some we believe will want to have the more traditional look," Mr Källenius reportedly told investors, reports Autocar.

It's understood the more futuristic-looking grille currently affixed to the EQS will remain, though customers will be able to adopt the more classic look as well.

These spy pictures of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz EQS unfortunately don't show this new design, however behind the camouflage we can see updated LED headlights, incorporating daytime running lights and indicators in the same module.

The updated EQS is expected to also gain a new front bumper design, updated tail light graphics and minor interior changes, though these are yet to be seen on camera.

Mercedes-Benz has previously hinted at the Concept CLA as being an indicator of what to expect from the new EQS and its smaller EQE sibling.

According to Autocar, Mr Källenius said the EQS will soon feature new battery chemistry, said to improve its driving range from the current claim of 664km under the lenient NEDC testing standard.

Additional changes to the EQS are expected to include a pair of reclining rear seats in place of the traditional three-seat second-row bench.

Mercedes-Benz sold 67 examples of the EQS in Australia during 2023, a slight drop compared to the model's 70 sales the year prior.
