Australia's climate trajectory running off-track

* Australia increased its greenhouse gas emissions by four million tonnes, or about one per cent, compared to 2022

* In total, the country has blown out its 2030 emissions reduction target by 116 million tonnes

* Australia will need to decarbonise by 17 million tonnes per year, a rate 40 per cent faster than the pace of decarbonisation from 2009 to 2023

* Renewable sources accounted for 32 per cent of electricity generation in 2022 which means solar and wind capacity would need to double in the next seven years to meet the government's targets

* At least 3612km of new transmission infrastructure is needed to reach the government's 82 per cent renewables generation target

* Following the COVID-19 pandemic, transport emissions have risen with more than half produced by cars, utes and SUVs

* Agriculture emissions also increased by three million tonnes with methane emissions contributing to 80 per cent of the sector's emissions, however this output can be difficult for farmers to address with agriculture emissions generally following livestock numbers

* The land and forestry sector removed 64 million tonnes more than it released, reducing the nation's emissions by 14 per cent

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE

* The government disagreed with three of the CCA's recommendations to implement a national ban on gas connections to new or existing homes and a fuel efficiency standard for heavy vehicles, or one for light vehicles that progressively reduces their emissions intensity to zero by 2040

* Of the 42 recommendations, the government has agreed to 13 including suggestions to accelerate approval timeframes for renewable energy projects, work with state and territory governments to deliver infrastructure and provide funding to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency

* A further 19 have been agreed to in-principle such as recommendations to provide further support for climate change research through a co-oordinated program, facilitate the development of a First Nations framework when engaging with Indigenous Australians on decarbonisation and co-ordinating with state and territory governments on timing for the retirement of fossil fuel generators

* The government has noted the remaining seven suggestions on best-practice protocols for extreme weather event studies, a policy review of electric vehicles and an extension of the small-scale renewable energy scheme.
