Charity Queen Rose Darling named Black Pepper's 'Australia's Kindest Person'

The award is a yearly gong on behalf of fashion label Black Pepper to coincide with World Kindness Day on November 13.

This year's winner is Rose Darling, the co-founder and chairperson of Community Help and Togetherness (CHAT), which she opened in 2020.

The volunteer run organisation is known in the community for its free Friday breakfasts which draws close to 100 people each week.

Following the announcement, Ms Darling told Nine News that she'd been working in the Port Adelaide area for decades and "there's always been a need" to help people in the area.

"It's one of the largest areas of unemployment, people sleeping rough, couch surfing," she said.

Ms Darling said her organisation had helped people not to feel so lonely and had helped with their mental issues too.

Winning the award was a "bit of a shock," she said.

She was nominated for the award by one their regular visitors.

It's a "wonderful recognition" for the CHATS team "because kindness just flows," she said.

It's not the first time Rose Darling has been recognised for good deeds, receiving Citizen of the Year from the City of Port Adelaide in 2021.

The finalist for Black Pepper's Kindest Person award was Tessy Stalker from Victoria.

Ms Stalker is the founder of Wonthaggi Community pantry which offers free food, toiletries and essentials for people in need and was started to help people doing it tough during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Black Pepper has opened up its nominations for 2024, looking to recognise the contributions of the 'unsung heroes' in society.
