Rodney Croome says financial recompense would help repair the damage

An independent, 88-page report to the State Government made 14 recommendations, including expunging charges and criminal convictions and making a one-off ex-gratia payment of a fixed amount.

The report reviewed Tasmania's legislation expunging historical criminal records for homosexual sex and cross-dressing which passed in 2018.

Equality Tasmania spokesperson, Rodney Croome said on the basis of the review's recommendations he would lobby the government to "repair the damage through financial recompense".

"It was a mistake not to include financial compensation in the original expungement legislation, given the trauma, indignity and disadvantage caused by conviction," Mr Croome said.

"The injustice suffered by those who were convicted demands more than acknowledgement and expungement, it demands recompense.

"We call on the Government to act quickly on the review's recommendations, given the advanced age of many of the men convicted under our former laws."

Mr Croome said the review recommended the scope of convictions for which expungement was allowed be widened to include resisting or obstructing police enforcing the repealed anti-LGBTIQ laws.

"It also found that application forms for expungement of a conviction are too hard to access," he said.

"There have been no successful applications under the 2018 expungement legislation, despite estimates that 10 people convicted under the old laws remain alive."

Attorney-General Elise Archer said the government would consider recommendations and "respond in due course".

"The recommendations put forward in the review largely focus on fine tuning and promotion of the scheme," Ms Archer said.

In 1997, Tasmanian became the last Australian state to decriminalise homosexual acts between consenting males.

In 2001, cross dressing became legal in Tasmania.
