GNL hockey: West Devonport and City Marians prepare for grand final

Preparing for the third grand final between the pair with the previous two split each way, Marians captain Monique Moore is excited for her side to defend their crown.

"The main focus for us this weekend is to play our game and communicate well with each other for four quarters," she said.

"We definitely won't be going into this week thinking about previous results - we know that we will have to play focused, team orientated and aggressive hockey to get the win on Saturday and we believe we are up for the challenge."

Moore's side defeated the Dragons in a 5-0 semi-final clash for the right to host the grand final in Burnie at 1pm but West Devonport coach Kendall King believes the score didn't reflect the contest.

Admitting her side were flat a fortnight ago, they bounced back with a convincing win against Queechy by changing some of their structures, which they are looking to run with against Marians.

"I think we are pretty excited for the challenge," King said.

"Obviously this year has been an unnatural one with the shortened season, so we never had any expectations going into it.

"But once we started winning and remained on top for a few rounds, we made the decision as a core group to have a fair crack so we are actually really excited going into Saturday and hopefully we can bring our A-game and come away with the win."

Filming some of their matches this season, King, who retired from playing after missing last season's grand final with a second major knee injury, said the Marians have a strong midfield to watch out for.

She described Zayna Jackson, who has consistently polled best-on-ground votes, as a "good little player" while Moore also peaked her interest in defence.

The Dragons completed their last training run on Tuesday but were without the unwell Sammy Lawrence, who is battling to be ready.
