DEPUTY MAYOR CANDIDATES
Peter Frank Rhodes
If elected, I will be working to give the youth of the community a voice in council.
Youth are the future leaders of our community and should be given the opportunity to voice their opinions on matters.
I will also be focusing on expanding career and employment opportunities in the community as this is an enormous issue for young people on Flinders.
I hope to explore the possibility of reducing the cost of travel to and from the island, as well as the development and growth of businesses.
I have been a Councillor since 2007 and lived on Flinders Is for 16yrs.
Some of my successful notice of motions have resulted in several infrastructure projects being funded. Issues needing more action are waste management, renewable energy, lobby for improvements in telecommunications & reductions in State Government red-tape, making our airport more viable, improve boat launch facilities in the Lady Barron/Badger Corner areas & protecting our coastal areas.
I work hard for all the community, am not afraid to speak my mind, am truly independent & have a proven record of getting things done.
Forty years on Flinders, a member of a family involved in farming, fishing and boat charter.
An active member of the Hospital Auxiliary, School Association, Lady Barron Hall and several council special committees.
I will contribute positively to the elected group, recognizing the difficulties, benefits and opportunities of living and working in a unique municipality, of the need to balance the freedom of island living with the current regulatory environment, an ongoing challenge.
I proudly represent you as Mayor and seek your No 1 vote for both Mayor and Councillor to continue the privilege.
JOHN L DICK
I have lived 4 years in the municipality.
I came here because of the ambiance and lifestyle.
I have 40 years experience working at the interface between government and nongovernment organisations at state and national levels.
I am used to working collaboratively and with a tight budget.
Council provides the basis of growing the community, along with infrastructure and encouraging investment on the islands.
Transport and poor communications add to the costs of production and restrict opportunities for all residents.
Your vote for me will ensure that these issues will be addressed.
Dear Voters, my name is John Gardner.
My family has lived in the Furneaux Group since 1820.
I have decided to stand for election to Flinders Council, knowing the importance of being a part of the decision making process.
The best result is gained through a collaborative, creative and positive approach.
Farming, tourism, the arts and culture drive this island economy and are fundamental to creating a positive community.
I treat people with respect and consider myself an ordinary person with an extraordinary desire to see my home reach its potential.
BILL LA GRUE
I wish to advise that I am standing for a position as Councillor in the upcoming Flinders Council election.
Given the opportunity, I will represent the community in keeping the island a strong and vibrant location focusing on the important issues such as declining population, youth employment and island sustainability.
Please consider. Bill La Grue. PH. 0408540211
I was born on Flinders Island and have lived here all my life I hold it close to my heart.
My background is in the fishing, farming and tourism industries.
I believe that my best skills are being able to talk with people and to take on board what they say.
I am not afraid to think outside the square.
Council’s role should be to create an environment that will aid people in setting up new businesses on the islands, maintaining infrastructure and services.
Our relatively untouched island paradise should be looked after environmentally, culturally and be protected from unsustainable developments.
PETER FRANK RHODES
I was elected to Council in 2011 on a platform of fairness & accountability.
We have made some progress but still have a way to go.
I seek your vote to continue making Council more responsive & responsible to residents & ratepayers.
Rate increases should not exceed CPI & we need to be careful with the amount we waste on consultants & bad advice.
I believe that we are best served by Furneaux Freight.
Otherwise we should own our own boat & the port.
We are being ripped-off with fuel costs.
Fuel should be at least 10% cheaper.
Council can achieve this by becoming a fuel distributor.
I seek re-election to consolidate the previous Council's work especially in the areas of community facilities, renewable energy, waste management and recycling, environmental protection with the encouragement of new enterprises via the draft planning scheme, and the continuing improvement of our port and airport.
We will be faced with both opportunities and challenges during this term.
I will continue to work hard, collectively, be representative and be active in debates.
I am committed to enhancing the health and well-being of our community and to protecting our superb coastal environment.
I believe that my experience in commerce, aviation and hospitality has given me the qualifications to add value and depth into future Flinders Council decision making.
I am now able to devote significant time to Council deliberations as well as maintaining interests in Lions Club, Community Shed and Maritime Association.
Most of all I have a strong belief in the future of Flinders as one of the best places inn the world to raise a family or enjoy retirement and I hope that my enthusiasm, energy and passion can make a difference in the future of the young, new and old in the community.
