Registering as a collection point for The Examiner’s Mission Possible campaign, the student leadership board said it was all about making a difference in their community.
“It’s been a tradition for quite a few years from all the the past SLB’s, so it’s just been passed on to us,” pupil Sarah Lyndon said.
The Mission Possible campaign, run by Fairfax Tasmania, aims to collect 30,000 items for City Mission, including canned food, pharmacy items and toiletries for people in need for the cold months ahead.
Last year Punchbowl Primary donated a total of 700 items to the campaign.
“I guess we’re giving something to the homeless because they can’t afford this food,” fellow pupil Sam Miller said.
The group said they hope that every pupil at Punchbowl will bring in one or two items to reach their target of 500 items placed in their Mission Possible collection box.
“Normally we get around 500-ish because some people bring in two or three,” pupil Mac Wilcox said, noting that some pupils often brought in as many as six.
“It’s a great feeling because I feel like ‘I’m giving something to the people who are less fortunate and are struggling’.”
Registrations to become a collection point for the Mission Possible campaign are still open before the campaign officially launches on March 26.
Schools, businesses and community organisations are encouraged to sign up to become drop-off points for food and other donations.
