Here is a recap of how the day played out:
Race 1 in the books here at Mowbray with Kathonious ($8.10) getting home for jockey Anthony Darmanin and trainer Adam Trinder on the fence by a short half-head from The Last Godfather and Seize Them All.
Another close finish for Race 2, with the Barry Campbell-trained favourte It's A Battle ($2.30) winning by a head on the inside from Matiano, with White Hawk third. Winning jockey was Victorian visitor Dean Yendall.
And the close finishes continue here on Launceston Cup Day, with Welcome Invader ($10.90) upstaging the favourites to win Race 3 by a short neck from Solomon's Song and Axion. Winning trainer was Longford's John Blacker with Sigrid Carr the successful jockey.
Ruthless Lover gets the photo finish in Race 4 from Breathtaking on the inside, but Breathtaking's jockey, Craig Newitt, has lodged a protest against winning jockey Anthony Darmanin for interference in the home straight. Final result to come.
MORE CUP COVERAGE
Uber Ed ($7) causes the boilover in Race 5, the $50,000 3YO Classic, running down hot favourite Mister Songman in the straight to win by a neck. Scott Brunton the winning trainer and Victorian Damien Thornton the winning jockey.
Jockey Jason Maskiell returns to the mounting yard one happy man after piloting outsider Tiesto ($48) to victory in the $150,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes for Longford trainers Ken & Tanya Hanson. Winning margin was a half-length with Gee Gee Secondover and Lady Pluck dead heating for second.
The favourites continue to be rolled here on Launceston Cup day, with Chillout ($10.10) scoring a one length win in Race 7 over Blaze Forth, with Geegees Doublejay a short head back in third. Result gives trainer Barry Campbell and jockey Damien Thornton a winning double for the day.
Favourite backers finally get some relief on Launceston Cup day, with the Scott Brunton-trained champion Hellova Street ($1.40) easily taking out the $100,000 Mowbray Stakes over 1600m. Victory gives jockey Jason Maskiell a winning double on the day as well. Step The Pedal 3.5L back in second with Royal Rapture third.
Leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir took more than 10 years to win his first Launceston Cup but only another 12 months to win his second.
Weir broke a frustrating run of bad luck in Northern Tasmania’s premier race when Big Duke was successful in 2017 and was back in the winner’s stall on Wednesday with Bondeiger.
