Some are well known with high public profiles in their respective fields of endeavour or interest.
But the majority are all but unknown outside their local communities. But it is there where they have given countless hours working behind the scenes.
The Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove paid tribute to the 717 recipients.
“Today’s recipients now join the company of more than 40,000 women and men whose actions have enriched our community and whose values we hold dear – professionalism, compassion, dedication, generosity, tolerance, and energetic ambition.
“For 40 years these honours have helped to define, encourage and reinforce our national aspirations and ideals by identifying role models. Today, we add a new group of people to those whose lead all Australians should follow.
“On behalf of all Australians, I thank them for their contributions. They are a source of courage, support and inspiration, and we are a stronger, safer and more caring nation because of them.”
Included in The Queen’s Birthday 2015 Honours List are 519 recipients of awards in the general division of the Order of Australia who have been recognised for contributions and service to fellow citizens in Australia and internationally.
