The Launceston City Council yesterday launched the 2012 Heritage Awards and is encouraging residents to get involved.
In its fifth year, awards chairman Jeremy Ball said buildings did not need to be heritage-listed for people to enter in one of the four categories: residential, mixed use, non-residential and promotion of heritage.
``The people who take time to restore the heritage properties of Launceston are doing a very valuable community service,'' Alderman Ball said.
``As tourists drive around our cities they may see public buildings that are well maintained, but it is the private residences often that people comment on most.
``Heritage in Tasmania is a massive economic engine driver.'' Last year's residential award went to Robert Dusting for his makeover of the 1931 home Sotherton, built by Dr Clifford Craig in Brisbane Street. Mr Dusting said he hoped this year's award winners got as much pleasure out the awards as he did.
