"Christopher logged the second highest aggregate score shot since the competition started nine years ago," she said.
"He scored 45 in the field pistol and 119 in the small bore, four points ahead of the respective second-place getters in each discipline."
Competitors shot two matches in the field pistol and four in the small bore.
Mrs Redpath said that Banfield had won the Tasmanian small bore championship at Bruny Island last October.
"We were pretty confident that he'd do well, but he exceeded even our expectations in his first national championship competition," she said.
Banfield was one of a three- member Tasmanian team that travelled to Bowral, NSW, for the competition.
He teamed up with his father, Graeme, in the open small bore competition and with Graeme Bransden, who was also competing in his first national championship, in the field pistol.
The father and son team finished fourth in their match, Graeme Banfield admitting that he had been the weakest link.
"If I'd have shot to my average, we'd have had a chance at second place," he said.
The Bransden-Banfield pairing finished their competition in third place.
