The Launceston-based band, formed in 2016, has set up a crowdfunding page for their planned tour of the East Coast of Australia.
Guitarist and vocalist for Cotton Pony Megan Turale said apart from fuel costs, all proceeds from their gigs since they started have gone towards this tour.
“We’ve basically for the two years that we’ve gigged been saving everything, no one has taken any money home,” she said.
Turale said the group has come a long way since they were founded.
“Everybody has to start somewhere and we’ve grown a lot in the last two years,” Turale said.
Drummer Joseph Durkin said unlike many Tasmanian bands who fly to the mainland and back for every gig, they plan to spend the whole tour on the road.
“We’re taking a whole month and doing it all and being there [mainland Australia] the whole time,” Durkin said.
Turale said she had always wanted to write songs and be in a band, however didn’t gain the confidence to put her work out there until the death of her father.
“That opened up the floodgates a bit and I just went for it writing songs,” she said.
“I had girlfriends who were playing in Launceston and I had recently moved here - I found it really inspiring to see them.
“It’s really kind of scary when you’re a girl and you don’t have that kind of confidence.”
The group described their music as having a folk-like storytelling style, similar to the likes of Johnny Cash and Paul Kelly.
Turale added that the group was excited to take their music to the next level.
“It’s actually about having a go, everybody has to start somewhere and we’ve grown a lot in the last two years,” she said.
As well as their tour, the group have released an EP which will have an official listening party January 25 at UpYork.
The group hopes to start their tour February 6.
