Mr Gibb is The Examiner’s IT guru and on Friday he shaved his beard for a cause.
He raised more than $1500 for the World’s Greatest Shave.
“My nan died of cancer, and I’ve always donated to the Cancer Council,” Mr Gibb said.
“I just thought it would be a good way to put my hair-growing powers to good use and actually get a decent amount for the Leukaemia Foundation.”
Mr Gibb’s beard started as a goatee in 2014.
“Then it just sort of grew into a beard and hasn’t been touched since,” he said.
“I found it got more of a reaction because it was my beard and not my hair. People got really serious because beards are quite sacred.”
He said the whole experience had been overwhelming, with the support making the “beard investment” worth it.
“The response that I’ve had, and the people that have donated actually got me excited about it,” Mr Gibb said.
“One of my friends even suggested having a wake for it.”
Mr Gibb said it would take his friends and family a little while to recognise the de-bearded man.
Three years ago, he shaved his hair for a cause, but decided to give the beard a turn in 2018.
Barber on George owner Hamish MacKean donated his Friday afternoon to shave the beard.
“Ben was pretty generous. Growing a beard is pretty hard, and then just shaving it off ...” he said.
“It becomes attached to you, pardon the pun, but he was nice enough to pick us to shave it.”
