Fresh from a dominant performance at the Tasmanian Championships in Hobart last weekend, Launceston Church Grammar’s Hugh Dolle set a new interschool record in the 50m freestyle.
The grade 8 student put down a time of 26.86 – 0.3 of a second off his PB – in a swim he was “pretty happy with”.
“I started swimming for club maybe three years ago and I’ve been swimming for a pretty long time,” the South Esk 13-year-old said.
“(The next step is to) probably just keep training and see where it takes me pretty much.”
Having competed in a swag of events on Thursday, Dolle will turn his attention to nationals in Sydney next month, where he will look to capitalise on his strong form from Hobart.
“I went in seven events and placed top three for all of them and got a national time for one of them as well, so that was pretty good.”

Scotch Oakburn butterfly enthusiast Jono Clarke also set a new benchmark by becoming the first multi-class swimmer at the event.
The 15-year-old – who was born in South Africa and lived in Wynyard before moving to Launceston a couple of years ago - competed solo in the 50m freestyle.
“I think it was a PB – all I hope for is just to keep going and never to give up,” Clarke said.
“I train with the South Esk Swimming Club and I train with them Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and on Saturday, so six times a week.
“When I get a bit older I hopefully want to go the Paralympics to swim.”
About 500 competitors took part in Thursday’s carnival.
