For up to eight weeks the section of road between Tamar and Lawrence streets will be closed, with detours in place.
City of Launceston general manager Michael Stretton said he hoped the public would be understanding while the works were carried out.
“The road will be excavated and reconstructed to contemporary standards, including base level works and appropriate subsoil drainage,” he said.
“Throughout the duration of the works there will be detour signage in place and people will need to take routes around this section of Cimitiere Street.
“We'd encourage people to think about how they are going to get to where they're going in advance, and to please be patient around the work site.
“The City of Launceston understands that this is a highly utilised CBD road and the works we have programmed are inevitably going to have an impact on motorists.
“We've timed the works to avoid clashes with major events like Festivale and Symphony Under the Stars, but there's no perfect time that will please everyone.
“We'd kindly ask motorists to bear with us. We will be working around the clock to deliver a contemporary road upgrade that serves the city and its residents long into the future, and all we can ask is for people's patience.”
A number of businesses, including two car parks, operate along this section of Cimitiere Street and will remain open as normal.
