As the oldest of 11 children, Mr Baker left school at the age of 15 and said he was “lucky” to get a job with the Hydro-Electric Commission.
Realising that his level of education was “well short of that required to make a career at Hydro”, he embarked on a period of further education at night school.
His career started at the engineering workshops at Moonah and from there he was invited to join Hydro’s personnel department and eventually worked as the HR manager.
When the Hydro-Electric Commission was split into three entities, Mr Baker accepted the position of chief executive of Hydro Tasmania, a position he held until he retired in 1999.
In the years to follow he was chairman and a director on a number of GBE’s, was the Tasmanian director appointed to the National Electricity Management and Market Co, and also served as a board members for numerous organisations.
