Together with waste-management company Veolia, the site will have a number of organics bins for stallholders.
Veolia’s state sales manager Peter George said the company was “really excited” about the new partnership.
“We will be recycling on the day and for the first time we’re introducing, probably in conjunction with the city council’s FOGO [food organics and garden organics] collection, an offering of an organics service to stallholders,” Mr George said.
“There is going to be a series of food and organic bins at the rear of the vendors’ marquees for them to use for the event.”
The partnership was about turning waste into a resource, he said.
“We just want to encourage the diversion from landfill, this will definitely minimise landfill,” Mr George said.
He said it was the start of the future as people became more aware about landfill issues.
“I think it’s the start of what we’re probably going to see happening everywhere now,” he said “All consumables, like cups, knives and forks – we haven’t seen much of that in the state yet, but from what we can understand – they’re getting more compostable types of foods and consumables.”
He hopes the collaboration turns into a long-term partnership.
