Retired Australian cricketer Dean Jones – and Fairfax columnist – laid down the law in commentary for Macquarie Radio on Faulkner’s dismissal during the Melbourne Stars’ recent Big Bash defeat.
Jones, a 52-Test batsman, first accused the Launceston 32-year-old of indecisive batting on Saturday night.
Innocuous Sydney Thunder offspinner Chris Green took his wicket when Jones suggested Faulkner should have swept, but instead was clean bowled by a legside delivery cheaply for five runs.
“He’s at a stage in his career, Faulkner, that he needs to re-evaluate his life,” Jones said on radio.
“He’s got to learn how to bowl the swing ball and he’s got to learn how to hit the power ball again.”
Faulkner, who won the man-of-the-match award in Australia’s 2015 World Cup final win, was overlooked for selection in the current ODI series against England.

Selector Mark Waugh had previously roused Faulkner up for an Australian return.
“James has played enough times now for Australia and he’s talented enough, so it’s a matter of him just performing for Tasmania at a higher level,” he told The Examiner in November last year.
