The 20-year-old had four teenagers in the car when he was allegedly travelling at 97 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Sunday afternoon – the passengers were aged between 13 and 15.
Police pulled the newly-licensed driver over on William Street at Westbury about 1.45pm after he was detected speeding over a railway crossing in a silver BMW sedan.
He was arrested and charged and bailed to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on February 14.
His car will be clamped for 28 days.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Tasmania Police Senior Sergeant Nick Clark said the “very high speed, combined with the inexperience of the driver and the fact that all the passengers were teenagers was of great concern”.
Last month, The Examiner launched its road safety campaign In Your Hands.
As part of the campaign, Senior Sergeant Clark reminded road users of the potentially devastating impacts of the fatal five, one of which is speeding.
His message was “take your time, don’t rush … the key thing is to make sure you get home safely and take care of not only yourself and your family but everyone else out there on the roads”.
Following the start of In Your Hands, the state’s Road Safety Advisory Council launched the We’ve Been Everywhere campaign as part of Tasmania Police’s Operation Crossroads.
Operation Crossroads focused on high-visibility policing and specifically targeted the fatal five, with an increase in roadside alcohol and drug testing throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
During the campaign, there were no deaths on Northern Tasmanian roads.
