The driver returned a reading of 0.216. Tasmania Police also caught two other P-plate drivers speeding in the North.
A P1 licence holder was caught travelling at 135km/h on the Bass Highway near Deloraine and a P2 driver was detected driving at 144km/h on the Midland Highway near Ross.
Acting Inspector Luke Moore said it was concerning young drivers around the state were doing “the wrong thing”.
“These are drivers that are new to driving,” he said.
“They haven’t fully developed their skills and yet they’re engaging in super risky behaviours. What Tasmania Police would like to see is for us to detect no infringements. But we know that there are large numbers of drivers on the road.”
Tasmania Police has so far conducted more than 4000 random drug and alcohol tests throughout the state since the operation began.
Thirteen motorists have been charged with drink-driving offences and 168 infringement notices have already been issued.
Twelve drivers have been fined for inattentive driving and mobile phone use, and five drivers have been fined for not wearing seatbelts.
“It’s on par with a similar period last year. It can reflect the sheer volumes [of tests] but it’s on par,” Inspector Moore said.
