Prospect Vale junior Ryan Thomas performed well against Australia’s best amateurs, qualifying for the match-play rounds of the Victorian amateur championship.

The 16-year-old competed in the Port Phillip open amateur over 72 holes at the Commonwealth and Kingston Heath golf clubs, and with excellent rounds of 71, 77, 76 and 72 finished tied for 15th.
The leading 32 players then progressed into the Victorian Amateur Championship match-play elimination. Thomas won his round one match, but lost 3-2 in round two against leading qualifier Lukas Michel, of Metropolitan, which was a very respectable effort.
In another successful northern championships Craig Hancock, of Wynyard, was the seven-shot winner with rounds of 70 and 69 on the par 71 Mowbray layout.
Promising junior Joey Bower, of Royal Hobart, continues to impress and was runner up with 74 and 72. Bower won the junior championship with Ronan Filgate, of Prospect Vale, runner up.
Jack Tregaskisjago, of Prospect Vale, won the Colts with Gus Burrell, of Kingston Beach, runner up while Launceston’s Shayne Walker won the seniors with Richard Denholm, of Royal Hobart, runner up.
Hallie Maeburn, of Royal Hobart, won the women’s Northern defeating Tammy Hall, of Prospect Vale, in a play-off. Hallie also won the junior girls. Trudy Vance, of Mowbray, won the division 2 gross and Marise Kearney, of Riverside, the net.
In division 3, Sally Stancombe, of Mowbray, took the gross on a count back from Helen Davies of Bridport. Helen won the division 3 net and also won the seniors. Riverside won the teams event with good scores from Marise Kearney, Francis Hudson and Alex Hansen.
Jilly Bye, of Prospect Vale, was the overall winner at the City Week tournament played at Scamander River. Patsy Muir, of Prospect Vale, won division 1, Jilly Bye division 2 and Beth Chilcott, of Ulverstone, won division 3. Foursomes winners were Di Woodhouse and Michelle Dazeley, of Ulverstone, Alison Archer and Jilly Bye, of Prospect Vale, won division 2 and division 3 went to Ulverstone pair Fleur King and Dot Bellinger.
Scott Priest won his third Tasmanian PGA championship title at Mowbray with 72 and a five under 66, finishing six shots ahead of nine-time runner up Darren Spencer with 71, 71. Daniel Smith was third on 73, 70.
