Recently, the government made a submission to a federal inquiry into national laws around cyberbullying, in which it appeared to echo some of the sentiments contained in Denison Labor MHA Madeleine Ogilvie’s draft Civil Digital Communications Bill, tabled in October.
The draft bill seeks to facilitate take-down orders for intimate images shared non-consensually on the internet, allowing victims to have private pictures immediately removed from social media platforms and websites.
But Justice Minister Elise Archer categorically denied that the government would support Labor’s initiative.
“Madeleine Ogilvie’s bill … would cause significant conflicts with existing laws and be impossible to enact, let alone enforce,” she said.
Ms Ogilvie said Ms Archer needed to “stop playing politics with people’s lives”.
“I suggest she gets some proper legal advice to inform herself as to the need for take-down orders and injunctions,” Ms Ogilvie said.
