The event kick-started the preparations for the Relay for Life 2018 for the Launceston region, with the event set to be held on March 24-25 at the Northern Athletics Centre at St Leonards.
Cancer Council Tasmania project manager Sheila Tivan said that everyone should get around the cause.
“It’s our way of fighting back against cancer. People do it to remember those who they’ve lost, and do it for hope. Our emphasis is that hope lives here,” Mrs Tivan said.
“All the funds raised from the event will stay in Tasmania. Get your family and friends involved, get your businesses involved, and start raising funds.
“Every little bit helps. You don’t have to raise thousands.”
“The relay is not as scary as it sounds – it’s actually very doable.”
Wayne Fenton hosted the event, and is a member of both the Relay for Life Committee and of ‘Team Groovers’, which has raised $30,000 since March.
He said there were many things participants could do to fundraise in the lead up to the event.
“We do sausage sizzles, we do the show gates at Deloraine, we’ve cleaned the toilets at Festivale, we do afternoon teas, we run raffles… there’s a lot you can do,” said Mr Fenton.
The relay raises funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, and support services.
People from all walks of life are encouraged to get on board.
