The alert was put in place following consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services, after a routine sampling detected evidence of e-coli.
The contaminated sample was just one of several tests taken from a range of locations across Risdon Vale, with all the others returning results meeting with Australian drinking water guidelines.
TasWater is currently working to resolve the water quality issues, with follow-up testing requiring 48 hours to fully analyse the results.
The precautionary alert means that all water intended for drinking and for food preparation, needs to be boiled prior to consumption.
Information on the boil water alert is available from the TasWater website or by calling 13 6992.
