About 10.30pm on Saturday, police were called to reports of a theft of two vehicles at Newnham.
It is alleged one of the stolen cars later ran a red light and crashed in to another car about 11.45pm, at the intersection of Wellington and York streets in Launceston.
Police say five people were treated for “a number of injuries almost immediately” by a passing Ambulance Tasmania vehicle.
Some of the occupants were transported to the Launceston General Hospital and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the second car was taken to hospital as a precaution. Tasmania Police acting sergeant Andrew Lusted said both vehicles were “significantly damaged”.
The second stolen vehicle was recovered about 10.30pm on Saturday.
Investigations in to the crash and burglary are still underway. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.
