Labor Leader Rebecca White made the announcement on Monday, saying that the fixed line would then be run by a private operator after opening up a tender process.
She said the plan would ease traffic congestion and allow for a masterplan to be developed for housing development along the rail line, from Bridgewater to Hobart.
“In terms of housing affordability, our rental market has become unaffordable … and the best solution to that is to increase the supply of land for medium density residential development,” Ms White said.
Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding claimed that the plan was uncosted and raised a number of questions.
“In fact, the only key detail is a plan to seize the rail corridor and hand it over to developers, which will privatise public transport in Tasmania,” he said.
