Tasmanian Police said investigations indicate he may have hit a navigation beacon.
Tasmania Police were called to the incident about 1am after a 32-year-old Dodges Ferry man failed to return from a ride.
Friends of the deceased man had started a search for him and found the jetski washed up on rocks near their Marion Bay campsite.
The man was located in the water, by his friends about 1.30am, but could not be revived.
Tasmania Police say investigations indicate the man left the campsite to transport two friends to Marion Bay and may have hit a navigation beacon while returning to the campsite.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter also joined the search.
